We’re excited to share that FineCraft Contractors was recently featured in Home & Design Magazine for our collaboration with designer Marika Meyer on a beautifully reimagined home in Somerset, Maryland.

A Thoughtful Transformation

The project centers on a 1949 center-hall Colonial that, while full of charm and character, had undergone a series of disjointed renovations over the decades. What began as a home with strong bones and great flow had evolved into a space with mismatched additions—most notably a poorly integrated kitchen expansion.

Working closely with architect Peter Miles and designer Marika Meyer, our team at FineCraft helped bring clarity, cohesion, and craftsmanship back to the home. The goal was not just to renovate, but to restore harmony—creating spaces that feel intentional, connected, and enduring.

Reimagining the Heart of the Home

One of the most dramatic transformations took place in the kitchen. Previously described as a “Frankenkitchen,” the space suffered from awkward transitions, inconsistent ceiling heights, and limited connection to the outdoors.

The solution? A light-filled, conservatory-inspired kitchen that opens seamlessly to the lush backyard. By raising the ceiling, reworking the layout, and introducing expansive windows, the new space now feels airy, functional, and inviting—perfect for both everyday living and entertaining.

Craftsmanship in Every Detail

Beyond the kitchen, our work extended throughout the main level:

  • Reconfiguring passageways for better flow
  • Creating a functional butler’s pantry from the original kitchen
  • Adding a powder room and coat closet
  • Installing and refinishing white oak flooring to unify old and new

Each decision was guided by a commitment to quality craftsmanship and respect for the home’s original character.

A Blend of Tradition and Personality

With the architectural and construction work complete, Marika Meyer layered in her signature style—combining timeless furnishings, meaningful vintage pieces, and bold design moments.

One standout feature is the living room’s Lotus wallpaper, which adds personality and warmth while tying into the family’s story. The result is a home that feels both classic and deeply personal.
